Twitch Stream Overlay Resolution: The Exact Sizes That Keep Your Stream Sharp

If you've ever finished a stream, watched the VOD back, and noticed your overlay looks slightly soft, pixelated, or misaligned — the problem is almost never Twitch. It's almost always the resolution you designed your overlay at.

Design every Twitch overlay at 1920×1080 pixels (1080p), export it as a lossless PNG, and place it in OBS at exactly 1920×1080 with Scale Filtering set to "Bicubic." That single combination is what separates pro-looking streams from the slightly blurry ones, and it takes about two minutes to fix.

Here's exactly how to get it right, plus the common mistakes that break it.

What resolution should a Twitch overlay be?

Make your overlay canvas 1920×1080 pixels in whatever design tool you use (Photoshop, Figma, Canva Pro, GIMP — all of them support this). This matches your stream output resolution, so the overlay maps 1:1 onto the frame with zero scaling.

Why this matters:

  • No upscaling. If you design at 1280×720 and stretch it to 1080p, OBS has to invent pixels that don't exist. Result: soft, smeared text and icons.
  • No downscaling. If you design at 4K (3840×2160) and downscale, you actually can get a clean result — but it's wasteful, harder to edit, and easy to get wrong with filter settings.
  • Pixel-perfect positioning. When you know your overlay is exactly frame-sized, you can place webcam frames and alert boxes by coordinates instead of eyeballing it.

The one exception: animated overlays

For animated overlays (Lottie, animated PNGs, or video-loop backgrounds), still export at 1920×1080, but keep the file size reasonable. A 1080p animated PNG can balloon past 50MB and choke your stream. For motion, prefer a lightweight looping video (WebM or MP4) at 1080p, or animate with OBS filters instead.

Why your overlay looks blurry even at 1080p

You can design perfectly at 1920×1080 and still get a soft overlay. The culprit is usually one of these:

1. You exported as JPG

JPG is a lossy format — it throws away image data to shrink file size, and it's terrible for flat graphics with text and hard edges. Always export overlays as PNG. PNG is lossless, preserves crisp edges, and supports transparency (which JPG can't do at all).

2. Your Scale Filtering is set wrong

In OBS, every source has a Scale Filtering option in its settings. If it's set to "Disable," OBS uses nearest-neighbor scaling, which creates jagged, pixelated edges on anything that isn't exactly 1:1. Set it to Bicubic for smooth scaling.

3. You're scaling the source, not the canvas

If your overlay image is 1920×1080 but you've dragged it smaller in the OBS preview to "fit" it into a corner, you're downscaling just that source — and you're fighting the design. Instead, build the overlay at full size and position your webcam and gameplay within it.

4. Your webcam frame is a separate low-res image

A webcam frame exported at 480×270 and stretched to 800×450 will look terrible no matter what. Rebuild webcam borders at the resolution you actually display them (typically 640×360 or 1280×720), and keep any frame art on its own PNG layer.

The exact export settings pros use

When you're ready to export your overlay from your design tool, use these settings:

For alerts and animated elements, export at 1920×1080 or at the exact size you'll display them (e.g., a 1280×720 alert box), never smaller.

How to check if your overlay is actually sharp

Before you go live, do a two-minute test:

  1. Open OBS and set your Output Resolution to 1920×1080.
  2. Add your overlay as an image source. Confirm its source size reads 1920×1080 in the transform window.
  3. Set Scale Filtering → Bicubic on the source.
  4. Open View → Preview (Fullscreen) and zoom in on a text element. If the edges are crisp, you're done.
  5. Record a 15-second test clip and watch the VOD on Twitch's player — not in OBS — because Twitch's player applies its own scaling.

If text still looks soft in the VOD, the issue is your bitrate, not your overlay. For 1080p60, Twitch recommends at least 6000 kbps; below that, the encoder struggles with fine detail and text turns mushy. Bump the bitrate before you redesign anything.

Overlay resolution mistakes that scream "amateur"

  • Designing at 1280×720 and scaling up. Text gets soft immediately.
  • Using a 720p webcam frame on a 1080p stream. The border looks fine, but the video inside looks muddy.
  • Mixing resolutions across panels. Your overlay is 1080p but your alert box was designed at 1600×900 and scaled. Everything should share one canvas.
  • Letting OBS auto-scale a small PNG. If your source is 800×450, OBS upscales it to fit — and it will never look sharp.
  • Exporting a screenshot instead of the source file. A screenshot of your overlay is compressed and re-encoded; always export the actual design file.

The bigger picture: resolution is part of consistency

Overlay resolution isn't just a technical detail — it's part of the overall polish that makes a channel feel professional. The same logic applies across your brand: your overlays should be consistent in style, your brand colors should be deliberate, and your scene layout should guide the eye rather than fight it. A crisp overlay is one layer of that; a well-built scene is the rest.

  • Overlay canvas is 1920×1080 in your design tool
  • Exported as PNG, sRGB, transparency enabled where needed
  • OBS output resolution is 1920×1080
  • Overlay source is 1920×1080 with Scale Filtering set to Bicubic

  • Bitrate is at least 6000 kbps for 1080p60
  • Watched a test VOD in Twitch's player, not just OBS preview
